...Gaskets sets include 2 water pump gaskets (2 less than a 56/62 needs)... In any case, both of these gaskets include a provision to seal the lower RH "bypass" hole. If installed as supplied, the LH side has the unused portion hanging out the bottom doing nothing for a living. Was this the case as assembled in Flint? Thanks, Dennis

Re: SBC Water Pump Gasket Curiosity...
No, originally there were RH and LH gaskets cut to match. It's become the way service replacement parts work to sell two that are universal (fits either side with visible overhang). You have to lay the pump over the gasket, trace and cut the excess off for one side if you want factory appearance.
On there being two less gaskets than needed, that's because you have an 'obsolete' Corvette that lacks proper motor mounts and has the Mickey Mouse front cross member mounting design. This can be remedied by simply moving on up to a C2/C3/C4 classic Corvette.
OR, drop by your local auto parts store and pick up another pair of 'universal' style water pump gaskets. Those in Washington State, might prefer the second vs. the first solution path...- Top

Dennis------
Although generally used in PRODUCTION, the left side gasket was never available in SERVICE from GM. Instead, since 1955, GM supplied only the right side gasket in SERVICE with instructions to trim off the lower hole when used on the left side.
I don't know of any aftermarket gasket manufacturer that ever supplied the specific left side gasket in SERVICE. However, some manufacturer, probably Detroit Gasket, once manufactured such specific gaskets and supplied them to the GM engine plants.
Fortunately, this is one of those cases in which it's very easy to duplicate the configuration of the original left side gasket by CAREFULLY t******* the right side gasket. No one will ever know the difference. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Hey Dude, I recall my 1969 1/2 ton Chev pickup...
...with the "new and improved" side motor mounts, coming apart on the LH side, jamming the throttle linkage, screwing up the fan shroud as the entire engine was turned loose in the engine compartment - AND, Chev said, "Hey, we got this neat fix - you just chain your engine down on the LH side to the frame...
Jack, BTW, thanks for the H2O gasket answer. I'll sleep better tonight.- Top
