    C2 Door Hardware Finish

I'm reparing the doors of my 66 roadster. The car was repainted a non original color by a previoous owner.

My question is: What color, if any, are the screws that secure the door latch mechanism to the trailing edge of the door. If they are natural, non painted, what color are the screws, black/zinc etc? Also, what about the two screws that hold the window chanel bracked? Are they painted body color or natural?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ken,

I'm pretty sure the door latch mechanism was installed before body color. The latch itself was masked off and the attaching screws got painted. Not sure about the rear window run screws, I've seen them both body color and black, they are black when new.

I believe that the two Philips screws that retain the rear window channel were installed after body paint, and should be black phosphate.

The window chanel screw holes in the door are large enough that they exceed the size of the screw head. There appears to be a requirement for a larger flat washer under the screw. Is this a fact and if so what finish are the washers? When I started this project, there were two large hex head screws that attached the window chanel to the door. Apparently, this was a fix by someone in the past.

          Thanks,

The screws for this application are black oxide Phillips head (about 9/16" across head) with an integrated star washer. The original holes have a loose clearance to facilitate some adjustment in the track. If the holes are exceptionally large then you'll need a flat washer (black) or repair the hole.

You mentioned hex head screws... did you mean phillips head???

              Steve,

The hex head screws were an addition/modification by someone over the past 40+ years. I understand they should be Phillips head. The holes are definitely loose, which are about the size of the head of the Phillips screws. That's what promped my question about the flat washers.

              Thanks,

                Kenn,

If you're determined to use factory sized fasteners, fiberglass repair is the only way to properly fix this problem. It's an easy fix and it's in the door jamb, easy to cover up. Go see you're local boat repair guy and ask for polyester resin/hardener and a little fiberglass matte. Tell him what you are doing, he will set you up.

Once the fiberglass repair has been made, drill a new hole, sand flat and paint to match.
