I'm not exactly sure why this is happening, but small bubbles started developing in the paint ONLY associated with the hood of my Ermine white '61 vette. I was reading an advertisement for a A/C compressor shield, which if installed on a 1963-1976 vette, it will prevent buildup and absorption of the oil, which will cause bubbles in the paint just above the A/C compressor. Could oil and gas fumes from my dual-quad 283 be causing the bubbles? And if so, how can I prevent them?

I've had the car since 2001, so I can't say for sure. But from what everyone tells me, it's a stock hood. But you raise an interesting question... how can I tell for sure?Comment

did you leave a wet car cover on the car ? If you have had the car that long I dont think its stripper wicking out. If the underside of the hood has a good coat of paint (not spray cans) the oil and fumes cant come through. BillComment

I'm not real sure about that. Granted that it'd probably take more than just fumes, but if it had a fairly good dose of oil slung under it, based on the history of GM paint blistering from air conditioner compressor oil, I'd think it could come through.
On one of my straight axle cars (my 60) which was original paint with one color only repaint on top at the time I stripped it, I've never been able to contain the blistering below the gas filler door. I don't recall if the condition was in the paint that was stripped, but it's never been stopable since. We stripped the area again once and blended the paint in that area, and a year or so later it was back.
It would also seem that if the blisters are fairly uniform and on most of the hood that it's less likely to be an engine contamination issue than if they're just in some small area, like directly above a fanbelt. The CI front end that I saw on a midyear that was blistered was pretty uniformly done on the entire area of the CI glass.Comment

The Corvette Image panels can blister anywhere.....and not necessiarly the whole panel either....Comment

I can't understand why C I hasn't either fixed the problem or quit selling em, AND why some of the major Corvette suppliers with good reputations are still offering them if they're that troublesome.Comment
