Front Rubber Dust Shields - Couple More Questions

Thanks to everyone who answered my initial questions regarding the front rubber dust shields. Now I know they need to be installed with just staples and NO glue. Having said that, I have a couple more questions.

    1. How many staples and where are they placed around the shield.

    2. Can someone show me a properly bent staple so that I get the idea of what I should be trying to recapitualate when I bend mine.

    Thanks.

Kirk, if you have the original front clip on the car, check where the original stapels went through the inner fender.

Also, check the archives on the staples as you can purchase a spool of the correct gauge wire and make your own.

Kirk, Don't know what year you are talking about. But if you have a 63 there is a pic in the aims. Rather difficult to read though. But it does list the staples. For the dust shield as they call it you use 11 staples. Rough sketch shows their location. LI sells the staples for a few bucks but I do believe they are SS for some reason. Listen to Harry. John

Kim: GM didn't use any glue, as has been mentioned here. But if you're working alone, tacking the dust shield in place with some contact cement makes things MUCH easier. Use the original holds in your fiberglass. Lastly, I don't like the SS staple wire because it's too hard to work with. Use Dr. Rebuilds and would recommend it. A couple of small needle-nose pliers are all the bending tools you need. Hold one protruding leg of the staple in place while you roll the other over. You can premeasure the length of the legs to eliminate any t******* later.

Kirk, don't know if anyone mentioned to you about no blackout paint under the lip of the dust shields (on the fiberglass) where the staples go because the rubber pieces were installed before blackout. I judge for this and educate the owner of my findings but may not take a deduction depending on the owners experience. I do write something on the score sheets regardless of my findings.

            Hi Jim
Does the the no black out apply to 68 corvette? As they had staples on it too. Thanks, grant

Well, i would like to say there was no change in the manufacturing process even in 68, but i have a 68 in my shop as we speek. the upper"A frame" dust shield is secured with plastic push-on type rivits and some type of metal rivit for the lower small pieces just above the frame. the fiberglass is dark grey and there is NO blackout paint visable. Jim, is the car in your shop a very late car?? Can you verify that it is the original front end? Does the hood opening have the reinforcements in the front corners? The reason I am asking is that we normally expect to see the shields stapled the same as a mid-year.

Dick, you made me look a little harder and as usual you have it right. i found some staple holes and on the drivers side there are staples holding the lower pieces in place. we want to get it right for all who read this years from now. thanks for keeping me honest. FWIW-jim
