1964 Fuel Fill Neck ? Again

Hi all,

After replacing my 64 gas neck seal I noticed that a few of the parts houses sell a long spring that is associated with the overflow hose. Can someone tell me the reason for the hose? My original hose was missing so I didn't realize it was needed when I purchased my replacement hose until after the order. If it's needed then I will order one.

The spring was added (1964?) to prevent the overflow hose from collapsing at the point that it bends to curve forward along the rear bumper brace. Judges test for its presense by sticking a finger into the outlet end of the hose....
