    Flooding at Idle

    Every once in a while my car will flood out when coming to a stop or while sitting at idle. I have checked the floot levels and they are set correctly. I have to depress the gas pedel to the floor to restart. Any suggestions where to look. The car is a 66 L72, brand new carb, not rebuilt. Should I lower the float levels in both the front and the back in small increments to see if it stops?

      Jerry,

      With a new carb I would like to rule out that anything is warped but then again that is sometimes the cause of excess fuel getting into the induction process. If it only does this once the car is at operating temp then I would drop the floats some more. I think the correct carb for your car should have the sight holes for the fuel level inspection. I always like to set the floats with the fuel level bellow the lower threads with the engine hot and running so that there is no fuel spilling out of the hole. If you haven't already done so after the engine stalls take the air cleaner off and look down the carb to see if there is any fuel seepage. A bad needle/seat could also can cause a flooding issue. Let us know what you find.

          Thanks Wayne,
          I have taken off the air cleaner before and there was vapor coming out so I lowered the float level a little and the vapor stopped, I will check to see if there is gas still dripping in. I am going to try lowering the float levels a little more today and try it again tonight. By the way it is a stock setup on the car.

              blocking the heat riser cross over in the intake manifold will remove a lot of exhaust heat from these aluminum intakes which causes the newer gasolines to boil.

                  jerry check for dirt on the needle and seat could be stuck open a bit

                      Jerry,

                      Check the vacuum advance to make sure it is working correctly. If it is frozen or leaking, the motor can act like it is loading up at idle.
