C3. Cooker VS Diamond Back & judging

we have a 68 427/400HP Cp that we are getting ready to judge. There are a few obvious things that we need to have replaced as some are just worn out .. one are the tires. Now we obviously do not have the "original" tires and we also want this car to be used from time to time .. so the question is ... wanting the ride of a radial ... which tire has the least amount of points deductions? I have heard that Diamond Back is the better NCRS judging tire BUT Cooker is the better made tire

OH by the way ... the jack was sold from the car before we obtained it .. so that might be fun to replace too

      Dale & Abigail,

People have told me that Kelsey Tire has the most accurate reproduction tires for my '60 ... it might be true for your '68 also. I'd say you would receive less points deducted by using a Kelsey tire reproduction (maybe 10% or 3 points) as opposed to a Diamondback Radial.

Kelsey Goodyears will judge the best, then the Cokers, and then the Diamondbacks will score at the bottom of the list same as Michleins, BFG, etc.

Tires need to be from the OEM supplier, proper configuration, and original construction. This is all spelled out in the Judging Reference Manual and the Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide available online from our sponsor

            Dale and Abigail,

You will score best using a reproduction tire like the kelsey that Dick mentions. However, if you want to drive the car and enjoy the ride, I would recommend going with Diamondback. They use OEM tires (modern radials) and will put the correct gold, white, red, whatever color line at the correct width that you need.

I went with Diamondback for my 66. They used a Firestone radial and put the correct white wall on them. The car was judged and I lost the standard deduct for originality on my tires and earned 100% of condition. I made up all those points and more by driving the car to the event and enjoyed the drive!

Diamond Back Classic Tires is an online tire shop that creates custom tires for classic cars. Diamond Back creates white wall tires, redline tires, blueline tires, goldline tires and other vintage tires for pre-1976 vehicles including Corvettes, Mustangs, prewar cars, postwar cars, European cars and more.
