C1 Rear Axle bearings and seals

I have developed a leak in my driver's side rear axle. Do I have to change the bearings in order to change the seal on the real axle, It's been a while since I pulled the axles and do not remember if the bearings are pressed into the rear housing assemby or to the rear axles.

The bearings are pressed onto the axles. There is a thin O-ring seal on the outer race and a paper gasket between the bearing retainer and the brake backing plate. Paragon lists a seal kit for 58 and newer C-1's that includes both.

Lee, The seal is an intergral part of the bearing assembly. A press is (generally required to remove the bearing and ring from the axle shaft. The press is also required to replace the bearing. The ST-12 is a decent workbook to work from. A good NAPA store should be able to come up with the correct bearing (not cheap). Hope this helps,

What year C1 are you working on? If the new bearing/seal still leaks, let me know as I had one that leaked after replacing bearings and seals twice. Pretty simple fix if Bubba has used a screw driver or other pry bar to try and get the bearing out.
