    Caterpillar Ignition Shielding wing bolts!!

Get this.....I work for a mass excavation company, and we run all Cat equipment. I was talking to the mechanic today by his truck, and he happened to have his bolt bin open. I noticed a couple of yellow wingbolts lying on top, and they looked just like C3 ignition shielding wingbolts, just painted yellow. I asked him where he got them, and he said they were off of some old dozer and the screws held some inspection cover on. I took two of them, and brought them home. They looked the same as my original 1970 ignition shielding wing bolts, just yellow. So, I soaked them in some Airplane Paint Stripper, and within 5 minutes the chrome underneath came out. They're identical to the ones on my '70, which I know to be original. So, the moral of this story is.....if you're missing some ignition shielding wingbolts, go find an old Cat dozer lying around and steal the inspection cover bolts and soak them in paint stripper! I'll try to get some pics up for comparison...just a little tidbit for you guys.

Original equipment designers rarely design new fasteners. They merely select a suitable part from the countless existing examples. Design departments have book shelves full of fastener and other standard hardware catalogs!

The problem for restorers is to find the actual manufacturer/part number or other original equipment where they can be obtained.

The Corvette parts houses have found some, and what they sell for two bucks each may only cost them a nickel or a dime. That's why they went into business.

This was a good find, but there aren't too many old Cats around my area.

Hey, I'll try to getcha as many as you want for....oh, lessee....$10.00/a bolt? Sounds like a good deal to me!! I took two real GM bolts out of my ignition shield cover and threw those two in....fit perfect. Seriously, I'm going to try to get a Caterpillar part number for these, as there's a plant 10 min. from me, and I'm around old dozers & scrapers every day. I bet Cat charges 5 times what NOS ones cost.
