I would like to trace the title lineage of my 1970 Coupe. Does anyone know how I can get this information? The only site I found went back to 1981 which is no help for me.

Re: Search for 1970 Coupe title history
Hello Josh; This can be a very tough challenge. It depends on your state. First, check with your state's DMV. Some states keep records longer than others. Most, I believe, keep records for only 10 years. Barbara Spear published a book "Finding Owners, etc". In it, she lists addresses and phone numbers for state Motor Vehicle Administrations. I have a copy of her book somewhere, so let me know what state you live in and I'll dig up the info for you. If you can get copies of past titles from your state, you can trace the ownership back to when your car was first titled in your state. The record should have a copy of the "out of state" title that was transferred to your state. Armed with that information, you then have to contact that state, and start the process again. When you have names on the titles, you can try to contact those persons. Internet searches, phone book, etc., are a help here. Good luck. It's tough and frustrating to do. I've tried, and am still trying!! Chuck Gongloff1963 Corvette Conv. 327/360 NCRS Top Flight

Re: Search for 1970 Coupe title history
I tried this last year on my 69 Camaro. At that time I was informed by Alabama DMV that a new federal law had taken effect which prevented the DMV from providing information about previous owners of vehicles. They called it the "Driver Protection Act". They told me that if they did provide the information, and something bad happened to one of the previous owners, the DMV could be held legally responsible.
Has anyone recently tried to do a title search and run into this?- Top
