    ENOUGH allready, enough is enough.....

time to start passing the collection plate to get a dedicated server. The 1-3 minute waits to pull up a post is, how shall we phrase it....exasperating. Raise the dues, ask for donations, solicit vendor ads, but DO SOMETHING.

Hopping from one server to the next ain't gonna cut it. Buy our own, or have the ISP provide us with a dedicated server.

We are haveing trouble now, can you visualize the problems that we will experience when the Driveline goes online? Can you say 5-10 minute wait before a post is up, or server failed to make connection?

Let's get a committe going and look into options available to us, other than sharring a server.

    Fast ENOUGH allready

For the past 48 hours, the NDB has been running as fast I have ever seen it go. What time are you getting on when you can't get performance? I usually check in in the morning and afternoon - occasionally evening (my home machine is old and slow). I am running frames with default settings using ie5. - Dave

      Re: Fast ENOUGH allready

I work from home and have an ISDN line connecting normally at 56k. I check the NDB 2 or 3 times a day. The usual wait time for me is less than 10 seconds.

George, I too experience delays of up to one minute before the page loads. My connection is always about 50K. It is better early in the AM or very late at night. Around 5-6PM EST, forget. Load up a game of solitare on the computer and play a hand between reading posts. Gary 21316

          George,

I too have noticed great speed variations. I am trying to address that with our server provider now. So far no answers.

I was looking for a new laptop yesterday on IBM's site. I wonder why they don't get a new faster server. It was at least as slow as I have ever seen this one.

There are so many variables involved in the speed that I am having a tough time pinpointing where the bottle neck is at.

Getting impatient and clicking the link over while it is still trying to get information only slows it down for everyone. Watch the little icon at the top right of your browser. It is a little flag with a globe behind it in IE, and the big N in Netscape. If it is still running, hitting your link again will not really help.

One thing that will help is to run two instances of your browser. Read messages on one while the other is loading the last message that you called.

                Good for you Mark......

the many peons who can't affort an ISDN line have to suffer with slow responses.

                  Art,

There are several ways. The easiest is to type Ctrl-n. You can also go to your Start Menu, and click on Internet Explorer, or Netscape or ? You just need to remember that when you post to one browser, it won't show up in the other browser window until you refresh your page.

I use two or three browser windows open at a time all of the time for any number of different reasons. When you go shopping, you can check to vendors at the same time and jump back and forth to read the fine print and compare prices. I use IE, and Netscape at the same time with the website to see if modifications look OK in each different browser. Sometimes Netscape will really show up ugly if I make a change without checking how Netscape likes it.

                    Slow Ride ....

                    George et al,

I don't think our local ISPs (at least not everyone's) are the problem. I've got a T1 line here at work and a 56K modem at home. I seen the slow responses in both places (Saturday and Sunday were terrible at times)

The chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the web is only as fast as its slowest pipe/server.

                    Don

P.S. pass that collection plate my way!!!

To open up a new Browser...

.... in IE5 you can right click on the thread and select "Open in New Window." This way you can get several threads going into their own windows while you're reading another one. Works great if you're using Reverse Threaded Guestbook style listings. ~Juliet

                        Peak internet times..

is like driving at rush hour. When I check the Board in the morning (equivalent to 3am EST) it is amazingly fast. When I check it at night (roughly noon EST) I can get out the sun dial to measure response times. The only thing that can be done is to avoid the peak hours.
