    '62 window regulator

    I bought the gear to replace on the window regulator but since I'm new at this I'm not sure how to get the old gear off and the new gear on. Can anyone help?

    Bryan, let's see if I can remember how it goes. First, clamp vice gripes onto the gear and housing to prevent it from flying off. Then grind off the big rivet where it's are rounded over, not the head. The big rivet will have to be be welded onto the new gear. Recommend to check out the crank handle gear to see if it's teeth are worn and the socket it seats into as well. If the seat is worn, it should be replaced as well. To replace the crank gear, grind off the three small rivets. Whatever, you should exercise caution to make sure the big spring doesn't cause things to fly off. Hope this helps. Regards, Gary....

      Hi Bryan

      I too have a 62 that I had to replace the window regulator gears and the crank gears. Do as Gary said. Now at the time I did mine, no one advertised the small crank gears. I did find out that Paragon had them. They were not listed in their book.I asked about them and was transferred to a different department and the guy I talked to had them. Give Paragon a call. They might even have the large steel rivet. I had to reweld mine at the time.

        Thanks for your response. It is the gear with the teeth that I have to replace, since there are a few missing. I got yhe gear I just didn't know the next steps. If I grind off the rivets, will the spring stay in place or is there some way to make sure it does.

          Hi Bryan

          It's been 9 years since I did mine. I can't remember if the spring has to be clamped but I do remember that it was an easy job for me. When you say it's the gear with the teeth, i'm assuming you mean the large regulator gear. Inspect the crank gear real good cause when the regulator gear wears, usually the crank gear does too. For the extra money,about ($30.00) I would replace the crank gear. You already have the window regulator out. Why take a chance unless you are 100% sure the crank gear is good. In the new Paragon book page 72, part #10146 (manual window regulator CLUTCH CASE). This is the crank gear as I call it. Also the large gear is called the sector gear and on the same page, part #3521K is a kit with the rivet for $25.00.. So they might have the rivet seperatly. Call them 1-800-882-4688

            Bryan, best to do as John recommends to replace both the crank gear and large gear. Got 2 good used ones from Paragon for my '57. Here are the steps I followed:
            1 - make configuration sketch, both sides so you'll know how to reassemble
            2 - clamp vice grip on crank gear cup
            3 - drill out the 3 small riverts on the crank gear cup
            4 - have a helper hold the regulator gear arm to keep the big spring from flying off
            5 - release the vice grip on the crank gear cup
            6 - release the regulator gear arm slowly to release tension on the big spring
            7 - grind off the back of the rivets on the regulator gear
            8 - replace the regulator gear
            9 - install the regulator gear on the arm and peen the rivets
            10 - install the pivot and weld/braze the back to the regulator arm (sorry can't remember if step 9 is done first or step 10 is done first, you'll figure that out when you're putting it together)
            11 - bead blast or clean the crank gear metal cup housing
            12 - replace the crank gear in the metal cup housing, add a little bit of lube
            13 - put the big spring on the regulator arm, pull down to line up where the crank gear teeth will mesh with the big regulator gear, then clamp with vice grips
            14 - put the crank gear cup on the regulator arm, line up rivet holes and clamp down with vice grip
            15 - install the 3 rivets with heads on the crank side and peen - 1 at a time
            16 - release both vice grips and put a little lube on the regulator gear teeth

            New gears should work like a charm. Remember, to clean and lube the track, slides, glides, etc. while you have the window regulator all out.
