    66 Stumbling update

To those who responded to my post about my 66 stumbling/hesitating on the highway, I thought I would update you. I took the distributor to a place with a dist. tester and, low and behold, the points started misfiring at around 2500 rpm. I looked at them closely and they grease all over them! When I rebuilt the dist. last week I must have put to much grease on the lobes and when it started spinning, it started slinging grease everywhere. That is why I was able to drive 20 miles out away and got about 10 miles back home before it started acting up. It took a while for the grease to accumulate on the points. I will be installing the dist. tomorrow and will post final results, but I am 95% certain that my problem is solved.

Isn't is nice to be your own worst enemy and create work for yourself?

    Keep Smiling

Been there, done that (or something similar), got the t-shirt, etc. Glad to hear you can still chuckle about it!

You shouldn't have to put grease on the points if you install a new cam lubricator. I haven't bought one lately, but I assume they're still out there. The last one was a cylindrical piece of polyurethane foam on a holder the fit in the slot for the original felt wick holder.

Duke, I put in new points and the felt lubricator was dry. I found out from the parts shop that the technique to avoid overgreasing, is to put a small dab of grease on the lobes of the distributor and give a couple of turns. Then take a clean rag, wipe off all the excess grease and you are set. I hadn't put new points in a car in a long time and I took my glue brush and daubed on enought grease to lube 20 felt wicks! No wonder the points were crapped out with grease.

Oh well, live and learn. Besides, I like spending 6 hours in my sweltering garage with 85% humidity.
