    Weather strip cement

Putting on the re-enforced rubber seals on top of SWC, which mounts on upper door/roof rain chanel.
The assy manual calls for "cement" between seal and body.
Was the sealant used originally dark or yellow, similar to 3M Weaterstrip sealant ? Was it the same stuff used on door seal, which was yellow in color ?

Good ? I want to here this also.
My thoughts on this is mixing the black and yellow glue to make a mustard color and than thin it with thinner and than spred it out with a brush, than apply the weather stripping.Have to think how the factory did it? it has to be fast.Denny72

I think the pot was heated to hot and burnt it.The glue was heated right? But aging good answer.

The adhesive was originally yellow, just like 3M Super Weatherstrip Cement. In fact, I would not be surprised, at all, if 3M supplied this adhesive to GM in bulk. As far as I know, it was not heated prior to application.

The darkening of the adhesive is due to age; it was not originally that color.

most interior shops use a "pot" that is full of glue and that could be the confusion on a heated pot---they use a paint type spray gun to apply it that has an adjustable nozel for wide or tight areas---the glue that i have seen looks like carpet/linoleum glue which comes out creame color and turns brown/yellow after aging---phil

string of glue from getting the brush out of the pot getting all over it had to be more controled. If you look close at the weather strip it was not sprayed but brushed and it was thin and smothed like paint.Even now days with 3M tube it is hard not to get it all over.
So if your restoring a bad glue job is a good job Yes?

Contact cement found in your local Lowe's or Home Depot works very well. Color is good. I use an acid brush, you can find them in auto parts stores, to apply the cement. Brush it on the W/S and body, wait until it tacks and stick the two together.

No repositioning with contact cement ...

Once contact is made between w/s and surface with contact cement on both and dried to "tacky", you can FORGET repositioning if it isn't right the first time.

There are prior posts on this...

Fire up your Google search engine with 'Pliobond' as the search target. This adhesive is still used today (especially aircraft applications) and is dramatically less yellowish in color than what you get from 3M + it's thinner and applies easily with a paint brush than the common form of 3M weatherstrip adhesive does....

Use the tried and true 3M "Yellow Death." It will darken with age.
