Only comment is that it is a really bad photo or there are a couple of interesting characters in the stamp.

It is hard to see the broach lines but they seem to be running the wrong direction?? Sort of weird looking in general though. Very deep character stamping. Typically, won't the top of the numbers be lightly stamped and the lower half of the numbers stamped heavier? Terry

No,the picture is still there. If you look between the number characters, I swere you can see lines running perpendicular to the typical broach mark pattern. I just thought it looked suspect. Terry

The depth of any part of the characters depends solely on whether the holder was held straight or tilted slightly. You can make them deep on top and light on the bottom or vice-versa. You could also make the characters on the left end deeper than the characters on the right end by tilting left and just the opposite by tilting it to the right. Tilted too much and some characters might not leave an impression at all. The depth of the characters depended on the size/weight of the hammer used, the force of the blow and the confidence of the guy whacking it. After hitting the hand once...the depth of the characters probably suffered on the next 200 engine pads.

Were the numbers stamped with the heads on or off?? I sort of assume the vin numbers were added with the heads on. The holeder was rather bulky. I believe there was a tendency to hold it at an angle outward which resulted in the bottom of the characters being deeper than the top of the characters. The characters are rather crisp (new dies?) and deep. I don't see much wear or corrosion that effects the pad in a lot of cases. All subjective. There seems to be a grain that is running perpendicular to the typical broach markings?? JMHO, Terry

Engine plant machine stamp was done with the heads ON for small-blocks, and with the heads OFF for big-blocks. VIN stamps were all done with the heads on (at St. Louis).
