WB marked Alternator bolt ( Plain Crazy)

    Hi all,

I just can't believe why folks would pay over $200 for a single alternator bolt, star washer and flat washer on ebay. The seller has sold two of these and so far he has made nearly $400 for both. Repo's are selling for around $2. Am I missing something here or are some of us just plain crazy?

Craig, some individuals pursue a perfect restoration. As near 100% score as possible. John Messinger has collected these somewhat rare fasteners for years and has capitalized well selling them. Personally I would not pay that for a bolt, but the buyers determine the price.

You need to start watching Camaro parts. The prices are crazier than Corvette parts.

      Dick,

I totally understand perfection but in comparison a restored alternator is only about $150-$300. Totally nuts in most peoples eyes.

      Cheers,

      Craig

If you think that is crazy a friend of mine sold a pair of FP bolts that hold the base of the tri power air cleaner for $500

I bought a repro WB for my 63 alternator cause my original was at the cad platers and we were down to the wire getting the car ready for a show last Sept. The repro bolt is just that.Looks like a fake. I changed it at the show before the judging started. We are not restriced to WB's you know. Other head markings were used. Course 63's didn't use the outside HD star washer. Just a split lockwasher. The only engine bolt I personally would pay big bucks for holds the harmonic balancer on. The TR graded bolt with the safety wire (not used) hole in it. That's a rare bolt. Other than that the rest of the bolts are no big deal. Can't think of one that is hard to find. Maybe the one on the alternator bracket that bolts onto the exhaust man. The one that hold the heater hose clamp on. That's hard bolt to find. None of the others are a big deal. Correct original hose clamps are much harder to find that bolts. Especially the bypass hose and the expansion tank hose clamps. Right Sr? John

              John,
My 65 SHP has the TR balancer bolt you described with the hole, would this be correct for my application?

              Thanks

              Paul

Paul, You mentioned you have SHP??? Better ask someone else on a separate post about your bolt. I know it was used for 63 and up for the hi HP though. John

                  Hi John:

One thing that is not correct on the repro alternator bolts is the thickness of the flat washer. The originals were unusually thick.

Regarding the TR balancer bolt that you mention, I thought that originals had no safety wire hole, and that the safety wire hole only appeared on service replacements. Are you sure that the originals had the hole?

Joe, Most definitely. I am quite sure the original 340HP and the 360 HP 63's had the hole/ The graded TR bolt that hold the harmonic balancer to the crank. Jorjorian and Hanson and I went over this detail big time. It was brought up on the DB also about a year ago. Wish we had another post for this bolt. Thanks, John

                      Crazy Bolt Prices

Looks like someone could properly repop the bolts and washers for a sales price more than $2 but substantially lower than $200.

                        TR bolt for harmonic balancer

Joe, All my reserch showed that the TR graded bolt with the cross hole was correct for my car. A lot of people argued with this-local Chevy guys but my NCRS friends said it was the real deal. I asked a lot of master judges. Also asked Jorjorian and he said was the real deal. Might have asked Michael Hanson but don't remember. Jorjorian if you are looking in please reply.
We should have had a post just for this hard to find bolt. John

Is this the TR bolt in question?

Craig, No those aren't correct. The real deal is a grade 8 bolt. Has 6 slashes. Your is a grade 5 bolt. Also the correct one is longer.
I can't remember-it's late. But I believe we covered this on a post a while back. The big block uses a thicker bolt than the small block. That info is buried somewhere. Craig-please start a brand new post for this bolt. It does become a topic of discussion with judges too. A lot of us don't really know the low down on this thing. Thanks, John

i pulled quite a few dampers back in those days

to change cams and i do not remember any having drilled damper bolts. mr gasket damper bolts had a hole drilled for a safety wire. i also remember drilling some damper bolts along with the 3 pulley bolts that did not have the hole for the safety wire. of coure that was a looooong time ago.
