Has anybody had experience with the conversion of the STV valve on midyear air cars to cycling clutch type.I see Old Air out of Texas offers this option instead of the old style diaphragm and piston.I just took mine out yesterday to rebuild and wondered what advantage it would be to convert it or not.I'am sick of going to Bloomington with an air car that ain't kool, temp wise that is!I threw in my nickname as George and Duke and Jerry and of course Varoooooooooom seem to be so fond of them. It's also my 66's Michigan license plate number. Re: STV valve conversion to cycling clutch........
The florida A/C outfit in Tampa does a rebuild on the old STV valve that will get you back in shape without converting. I know of some who have conveted, but I don't see why if the original can be made to work. Believe me, they do blow cold when properly set up.- Top

Re: STV valve conversion to cycling clutch........
Lou, I have a 65, I sent the STV and drier to Classic Auto Air in Tampa. They rebuilt both for use with 134 freon. It is working well and I can buy the 12 oz cans for $5.50! I did quite a bit of investigating and most recomend to stay away from the cycling conversion (let the compressor run as designed). This is my second mid-year w/air and my experience is they work very well. In 1987 my family (2 adults & 2 kids) drove our 64 on a 1000 mile vacation in July (it included NCRS convention in the Ozarks) and were comfortable. Don H.- Top

How do they rebuild the valves?
I was told by the A/C place in Texas that my POA valve was bad. The place in Tampa, FL said they "rebuild" the valves. Is it truly a rebuild, or do they justflush out and repaint? Am I better off going with a replacement unit?
TIA! Brandon- Top

Re: How do they rebuild the valves?
Brandon-I don't know as far a POA valves are concerned as they appear to be a sealed unit. The STV valve on my 66,the last year for it on Corvettes as they changed over to POA valves in 67,can be rebuilt.I've seen NOS POA valves for sale they seem a little easier to find than STV valves.I would assume that the Florida place must be cutting them apart.Call'em up and ask it shouldn't be any secret.Lou- Top
