    It has been 25+ years since I owned my 70 vert but I recall having an issue like yours. If the deck lid seal is working and also the drains then I think you need to check the interior vent housings. As I recall I had to caulk mine up as water coming into the vents was running down between the vertical carpet and rear panel soaking up into the horizontal carpet. My vertical carpet never was wet, just the horizontal.

      Thanks for writing. 1982 seems like yesterday :-)
      Sounds like a similar problem with perrhaps similar cause.
      By interior vent housings, do you mean the 2" x 12" inch (vacuum operated?) Astro Ventilation doors/flaps?
      I glanced and felt those, and they were not wet.
      Where and how did you apply caulk?
      Did you have to remove the vents on the rear deck, or pull the carpet back and apply your fix from the inside?
