    Daytona 1957 Slideshow

Chevrolet and Jam Handy produced a silent slide show "Dateline Daytona" to publicize the success Chevrolet was having with go-fast cars. I digitized the slideshow into a movie (and added a little Beach Boys to it). Some really nice 57 Corvette slides near the end. File is BIG - 16mb in size.

      Ken-

I assume you are using a windows pc. I use a Mac, so I am not 100% certain how to download the file to your hard drive. I suspect if you right click on the movie while it is playing, you will pull a dialogue box that will give you some options, including the option to save to your hard drive.

If this doesn't work, I can always mail you a CD with the movie and big pics of each slide.

            Don Yenko ?

I am not 100% certain..but I think the picture is Don Yenko and his 1957 Corvette. The car looks familiar as Don was at the February 1957 inaugaral NASCAR Sports Car race at Nearby New Smyrna airport which was part of the 1957 Daytona Speed Weeks event.

Check out the column mounted tach, radio, radio antenna and I believe that is a Yenko license plate frame.

            Pretty cool.

            Russ..thanks for your great work!

I have a picture of the Yenko car at New Smyrna. If I can find it ..I will post it.

The February Daytona Speed weeks was open to all comers!

            Joe

              Jam Handy Productions

Jam Handy also produced a 16mm sound film as part of the DSS (Direct Selling Service) series avaliable for all Chevrolet dealers by subscription. This film (DSS 57-3)was titled "Count the Checkered Flags". It contained footage from major races in 1957 including Daytona. The theme was that you could order your new 1957 Chevrolet or Corvette with the same options as those on the winning race cars. The film was never released due to the ban on racing. It was replaced by "Safety Built In also DSS 57-3. Dynamic Films, Inc. produced a film covering the 1957 Daytona race. This was titled "The Sand Barrier". "The Big Challenge", another 16mm film, also contains footage of the 1957 Daytona race.

Count the Checkered Flags and The Big Challenge are very rare, probably only a few in the hands of serious collectors. The Sand Barrier is available in VHS and maybe DVD from Doak Ewing.
