    '69 wiper solenoid

What is the correct way to check the (tach mounted) wiper solenoid on my '69?
Power to both terminals or 1 power,1 ground?

The electro-mechanical solenoid mounted on the tachometer for the WSW system works this way. There are two electrical terminals on the case supplying current to the solenoid windings. One side is connected to B+ (12 VDC) and the other side runs to ground through the separate wiper switch on the center console.

The vacuum side of the assy accepts vac from the engine compartment and passes it through the over-ride switch (under the steering column) and on to the wiper door actuator in the engine compartment. When the WSW switch is turned to either the low or high speed position, the solenoid's electrical circuit 'makes' and vac through the relay is vented to the atmosphere.

The loss of vac pressure to the wiper door relay, causes the wiper door to open. Alternatively, pulling down the manual over-ride switch also vents vac causing the wiper door to open.

You should find a nice description, repleat with drawings in your copy of the 1969 Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual, in the Electrical-Body And Chassis section.

      Thanks Jack,
The solenoid that I am working with appears to be original.

If want to do a bench test, do I need to ground the body of the solenoid also?

The vacuum port that accepts engine vacuum, is that the port on the same end as the terminals or is it the port at the other end that comes off at an L ?
