CA black and gold plate lettering...

The letters on these plates correspond with what particular year car they would
have belonged to. For instance, an S or T would have been used in '66. I had a '66 with original black plates starting with T. Can someone tell me if U would have also been used in '66?

As far as an original-issue plate, I doubt it. However, if it did happen, it would have been only for VERY late in the model year.

California plates are issued in sequence without any meaning as to year. Thus the date of issue for a specific plate depends upon the number of plates issued up to that date. If you have a specific plate number you might try contacting Calif. DMV and see if they can tell you the date of issue. I think that would be a long, long shot.

Other than that, poll people for date of issue of plates around the time you are interested, you may get lucky and find someone who was issued a plate close
to the one you are interested in.

I have a California Black/Yellow plate YUX975 which was issued in June of 1969.
      Good Luck!

I believe '69 was the last year they were used. I had a May built '66 with black and gold plates beginning with "TFS".

A "U" plate would have been very late '67 or early '68 models.

Most '68s had "V" and "W" plates, some with "X". Typically they ran through about 3 letters per year.

We bought a new 1967 Pontiac in April. The plate was UCL964. The vehicle was registered in Los Angeles County.
