    74 Hood Jambed

Does anyone have a solution to getting the hood of my 74 loose. I removed the plug in the hode and tried move the release without succes. I then removed the bottom splash plate and the canister. I got my hand up far enough to feel the release cam which is jamed under the release tang, but cannot get up any further. I am considering cutting the inner fender above the washer bottle, but would like to try almost anything else first.

John, I would exhaust all my ingenuity before I cut that inner fender up. I think you can do this, but you're going to need to be persistent. If you don't need to get under the hood right away, then do nothing if you can't operate the latch...walk away from it and give yourself some time to think and regroup.

I can't really help you any more without actually seeing, er...feeling that latch. I would first try unjamming the cam, and moving it to the usual latched position, and then operating the release lever manually...even if it means that pliers or screwdrivers have to be used to extend your reach.

I've seen cases where try as hard as you like, the catch won't release the latch... Usually the result of the hood being closed when the catch wasn't bolted FIRMLY to the firewall causing it to simply 'walk' around.

In those cases, the way out is to come from below and unbolt the latch from the hood. Getting onto each of the latch plate bolts is a (*&*^% of a job, but it CAN be done with articulating sockets and clever wrenchmanship...

Latches are attached to the hood and catches bolt to the firewall. The bolts holding the latch assy's to the hood point downward making them 'accessible' (albeit difficult to reach) from below...

            Of "Latches"...And "Catches"...

And "Sna...(ahem, never mind). Latches??!! Catches??!! UNCLE JACK!!!! NOT TRUE!!!

Where did you pull that out, anyway...the AIM calls the part on the hood a COVER ASM., 3966627-8. The part on the cowl is described as HOOD LOCK ASM, 3966621-2. Latches and catches, indeed...I knew we were getting flim-flammed when I felt that little tickle after "catches".

Just making sure John understood the message...only makes sense; you'd have to be double-jointed with "double articulating" sockets to make the cowl side work.

              Re: 74 Hood Jambed

Thanks all. I finally cut a 4" X 6" section out of the left inner fender. After that I wasw able to unbolt the male latch with an articulated ratchet box wrench and then release the hood. Not a great thing to do, but it worked. I am in the process of fiberglassing the opening. In a couple of days it will be good as new.
