    Original 57 Tranny Painted Black?!?!?!

I just picked up the original motor and tranny from the engine shop. My engine builder farmed out my transmission to one of his buddies.

The engine looks great but I have 2 problems I want to vent to this board about, and see what you guys would do.

    A. My original transmission to my 57 was rebuilt and painted completely BLACK!?!?! The transmission guy, who seems to be not operating right now, had a tree fell through his shop, so I can't really bring it back there.

What would you guys do? I am out 1000.00 on the rebuild and now I have a rebuild and incorrectly colored tranny. I can't sandblast it, as the dust could get inside the case, and it is completely rebuilt, awaiting fluid and installation.

No, I didn't say not to paint it black.. of couse I never said to paint it at all! I have never seen a painted corvette tranny before, why would I even think that some idiot would paint it on his own doing.

    B. is that the bell housing was painted completely orange. Isn't it supposed to be "as cast"

any ideas on paint removal of already restored items....

    thanks,
    Jacob

    Jacob -

Just use paint stripper on the transmission, and protect the output shaft seal, shifter shaft openings, and where the input shaft enters the front bearing retainer. The bellhousing was on the engine when it was painted, so it should have at least the front few inches painted orange (coverage varied).

Jacob....my '63 trans was painted metallic turquoise. I think some rebuilders used "THEIR" color to ID their work. just a guess.....Regards Frank

My 1960 Warner 4-speed was painted black while the aluminum tailshaft was natural. I purchased this car from the original owner in 1989. The car had set since 1973,and with 94,000 miles had never been apart. Car was BG and Duntov in 1992 With black painted transmission.

thanks everyone! Chuck, that's actually a small breath of fresh air. Maybe a stupid question, but did the judges go under your car during judging? Thanks, maybe I will just leave it black.

          Best Regards,
          Jacob

Trans case will ofter appear black, side cover, mainshaft center bearing retainer plate, and tailhousing will be natural aluminum. The chassis judges will generally see that much without difficulty.

Bill is correct in that only the cast iron case is black. The car was judged in the air conditioned convention center in Joplin, and the chassis judges stayed under the car so long I think they may have been taking an afternoon nap.

                Chuck,

Joplin was a good judging meet.

You were not supposed to notice us napping under the cars.
