I am running my '57 on single points and the car runs very well. There is room in the distributor for a second set of points, and I am curious as to their function and their importance to the intrgrity of the car. Many thanks for any info on this.

Re: 1957 distributor
The second set of points basically shares the breaker load with the first set. That's why you CAN get by with just a single set of points in the distributor. More than one owner decided to discard the second set of points to simplify the tune-up chore or simply run on one set in the event a misshap (one set broke or 'welded' shut) occurred.
The con factors are with two sets of points, they must wear dead nuts equally or dwell will start to drift requiring tune up maintenance AND if one set of points fails in closed circuit mode (contact points weld shut) your engine is dead in the water. The pro factors were wear should be reduced because the electrical load is shared between the two sets AND you've got a built-in spare should one fail in open circuit mode.- Top
