I agree with Tom, I would run not walk away from Jasper. They have a good warranty but would deck your original number block.

I would talk with your local NCRS Chapter members and get recommendations based on their experience then walk in that shop and talk to them about what you want.

Put your expectations in writing so everyone understands.

Bill read what you have done with your 74, LT-1 heads, Eldebrock intake etc. Based on the changes already done to the base engine, a brand new four bolt main GM engine is available, the 350-330 HP model that would likley give you the performance you are after. You can save your 74's original block. The 350-330 will require another Eldebock intake that will fit the newer performance heads bolt pattern of the the 350-330 HP engine. Also comes with a new engine warranty. This engine won't cost $4,000 and you can have it installed and back driving the car in a couple days.

Re: Rebuild on #'s matching engine

Following the sound advise of you all, today I arranged to have the car moved to a storage garage while I figure out what to do. The car started running on six cylinders last week when I was about 50 miles from home. I took it to a nearby shop recommended by a friend. He's still a friend (he's a Corvette guy) but the shop leaves much to be desired. The shop thougt it was an ignition problem but later found no compression in two adjacent cylinders. After pulling the head they found a bent valve. They could not tell me why the valve was bent other than the fact that it hit the piston. They said given the general condition of the engine they recommended the Jasper rebuild. Before this problem the engine ran great with lots of power. I'm getting a second (maybe a third) opinion on the complete rebuild vs repair and will not consider the Jasper rebuild. Since my car is a driver, if the engine does have to be rebuilt, the idea of getting a crate engine and storing my #'s matching engine for a future owner makes sense.

I'm leaving tomorrow for vacation and will address the issue when I return. Thanks for your help, I was being rushed into making a quick decision. Bill
