    OT: Indy 500

Going to my first Indy 500 this weekend. Anyone have any tips or tricks on what to do while there? We'll be there both Saturday and Sunday.

    Thanks.

Infield or grandstand seats? If you are infield, I found that motorcycle is the transportation of choice.

You lane split to the front of the line at about 4:30 am and wait. Then about 5-5:30 am, they send all the motorcycles up to the north gate and you get in pretty much ahead of the crowds. And you have transportation inside during the race to go from corner to corner.

At least that is how it used to be. I haven't been in several years, and they may have stopped that from the world being PC now.

Don't plan on driving to the track for elsewhere that morning. It will take hours. Take a sleeping bag and sleep in line. The traffic used to run until about 2 am or so, then they would just shut it down and wait. About 5:30, it began to run again as they shuttled people to various gates.

OK, we'll check out the museum. Where can I get addresses for the drag racer shops? Thanks.

          Chris,

At 5:30 a.m. I'm still in REM sleep. I certainly hope we make it before the race begins. At least I'll enjoy a good cigar while we wait.

We have VIP tickets and parking, but that may not mean much. Oh well, we'll see how it goes.

I been going to the race almost every year from 73 and will be at the end of the pits near turn one. Lots of fun and the drive to the track only takes me one hour so I leave the motel about 10AM. They know how to move the traffic much better than did ten years ago. I'm in the motel and will take the grandkids to the parade at noon Saturday and see the new Corvette pace car and the drivers up close as they ride in open cars or trucks from GM.

As a native Hoosier, I have been to the track many times. I agree that the museum is a must see. The parade is also a great event. The best is if you can pick up some pit and garage passes. It's amazing just to stand outside some of the garages and watch those guys work on the cars. I have some great pics somewhere.

Dave, if '73 was your first race, then I am surpised you went back. That was a tragic year most of us would rather forget.

I was their in 73 on the day the race was run as my barber came home to go to work after all the delays and by chance I got a haircut after work and he gave me his tickets. A friend and I who rode to work together went to the race instead of to work that day. It was fun to be young and do things like that.

I was working in a radio station in Ohio. I couldn't get it on a radio in the station, but I kept watching the AP wire service teletype for race information. It was very sad and shocking to read it, and then I had to read it over the air in the news.

Young and free, those were the days. I remember calling from a rest stop on my way to Wisconsin skiing that I was "sick" that day and couldn't come in. I was hoping that they couldn't hear the tractor trailers going past while I was on the phone.

I wasn't at the race in '73, but I was listening to it on the radio. TV was always blacked out locally, and still is to this day. The video was on the news later that day and it was very disturbing for a 9 year old. I lost interest in the race for a few years after that.
