    63 FI original piston specs

Does anyone know where I can find the original pistion specs for a 1963 360 hp FI engine. Or a replacement brand and part number that is the same specs as original. Thanks!

Pistons were forged aluminum dome ht .120, displacing 5.3cc. There is a thread on replacement pistons in the archives from a week or so ago, search "pistons replacement" and you should find more than you need.

Duke, My 63 FI car has the FM pistons and also has their cam. Not your favorite one though. WE used the Speed Pro CS113R (097) cam. I know you like the LT1 cam better though. I believe I may have read that a time or two or three or......... Thanks, John

Federal Mogul Speed Pro L2166NF - available in standard, 20, 30, 40, and 60 thou over. These are essentially the same TRW manufactured pistons as OE. This TRW automotive operation was purchased by F-M about 15 years ago.

I recommend them for all SHP/FI rebuilds, fit to a nominal .0035" skirt clearance. With OE machined components and proper head gasket thickness selection, the actual true CR range is about 10.25 to 10.5:1, which is okay with a SHP cam and premium pump gas.

Dome height is speced at .125". Volume is as mentioned by Bill.

If you're rebuilding the engine, suggest you search the archives and pay particular attention to connecting rod issues, head work, compression ratio management, and camshaft selection.

With proper management of your project and attention to detail, you can achieve about 350 SAE NET HP (about 300 at the rear wheels with SAE density air correction) and 7200 safe, usable revs with a completely original appearing and sounding engine that operates detonation free on premium pump gas.

As a point of reference, as built by GM your engine produced about 300 (honest) gross HP, 275 net, and 230 at the rear wheels. The key to improved power and torque bandwidth is head work and camshaft selection, and in order to provide reliability and insure your block, the weak OE connecting rods must be upgraded.
