Here is the bottom of an "embossed" filter as used from 1969 to about 1971 or 72. It should be exactly like the later white filter except this one has the raised lettering.

Here is a side view, including label, of the blue filter I described. As I mentioned, I believe that this one was used for, at least, later 1974, if not all of 1974. Of course, you need to use whatever the judging guide says. There's no danger here of removing an original part (for you or, likely, anyone) just to be consistent with the JG.

Here is the bottom view of the blue filter. You will note that it has the same 1-3/4" raised area as the white filter. Later examples of the blue filter (which, incidentally, used a series of different labels) had the 7/8" OD raised center.

          Paul-----

Nice looking filter labeling design, though. With respect to colors, they're almost what you could call a "retro" design filter hearkening back to the late 60's. I wonder if this design pre-sages a change for Delco filter labeling in the US?

            John,
The bottom is rounded so probably not correct. This one is an orphan as I switched to PF-35 on my 1967 327/300. They cost about $5.00US. (The specks are from a rattle-can project that was too close.)

              Re: C3 PF-25 oil filter

Paul, I see what you mean by rounded. Not a very distintive flat bottom that I look for. But a nice cheap filter. WOnder why the USA doesn't sell them anymore. I guess are cars are too old for most corp giants to care about any more. The US guys should stock up on the PF 25's cause it fits a 100 vehicles. At the Carlisle shows everytime I bring a couple of cases of the ebay ones they sell out fast. John

Try National Parts Depot. They stock white reproduction PF25's for $25 each (at least they did just a few months ago). I have several of them for my '69 and they have judged fine.

                    Joe,

Yes, I am speaking to all this with regard to a Jan. 11, 1974 car. The TIM/JG describes the original filters as follows; "white background with red AC logo and blue stripe and lettering, it's believed that oil filters in '73 & '74 had embossing on the bottom, but there is strong evidence that un-embossed filters were available during this time as well. There is no conclusive evidence what the original assembly line oil filters were. The current AC Delco replacement PF-25's are dark blue with a apper tag describing the model and instructions." With that said, based on the specs provided in the TIM/JG, it sounds like what I have is pretty close and as good as it's going to get for me in this category.

Thanks for the photos and your detailed response. It's been a real help.

                      Ray-----

I don't think that the embossed filters were used anywhere near as late as 1973 or 74. Like I say, though, since there are so few (maybe none) with the original filter, it's hard to confirm one way or the other. Basically, we have to go by SERVICE availability of the embossed filters. I've never seen one in a box dated after 1972. I think that it's reasonable to assume that the same filters were provided to SERVICE as were used in PRODUCTION during any given time period. It is slightly possible, though, for an item like a filter that PRODUCTION and SERVICE pieces were different for a period of time. I doubt it, but it's possible.

I do think that what you have is fairly close to the description in the JG, so that's what you want to use. NOS examples of the white, non-embossed filters do come up fairly regularly on eBay. They sell for WAY less than the embossed type---usually less than $100.

                        Jeff,

Not sure who judged your chassis at that meet. I know I didn't.

The common repro oil filters are more cream colored than an original, and also appear to be powder coated or have an overly thick application of paint. They also have paint on the bead of the canister, and originals did not. I'm not sure if NPD sells the same one as the Corvette suppliers, but I doubt there are too many companies reproducing these.

                          Patrick:
I just compared the NPD oil filter with the repro I purchased from Paragon and there are significant differences as you suggest. The white is slightly yellower and is more matt than the Paragon. The bead is painted and the Paragon is not; the "button" on the bottom is much smaller on the NPD part; the blue striping is in different locations; the indentations at the bottom are shorter and not as deep on the NPD piece. Of course neither has the embossing and there may be other differences between the Paragon and original that I don't know since I don't have an original to compare. I can't read the name on my judging sheet so I don't know who did the judging but full credit was awarded for the Paragon part. I look forward to seeing you at the MI chapter meet in 2 weeks. Maybe I can be assigned to a team with you so I can learn something.

                            Jeff,

If you get a chance, bring the filters to the meet. I'd be interested in seeing them.

I suspect that we could both learn from each other. If the piece you purchased from Paragon is as you described, then it is different than the ones I have purchased from them. The ones I own are the yellower ones with the painted bead.

                            See you then.

I looked at what Paragon was selling in January at Orlando and the top lip was still painted but as I recall the price had went up to the 40-45 range.
They must have a new part and they do sell their seconds at shows.
