Guys, my 64 coupe has its original Carter 4 barrel, it starts up great when cool or right after shut down when hot. But when hot if it sit for a few minutes it is very diffult to restart. I have cleaned and adjusted the choke, I have reseated the line that goes into the manifold. And I have cleaned the carb. Any ideas, Thank you

Re: Hot Start Problem
After you've run it and its hot, shut it off. Then remove the air cleaner and observe if there is and wisps of smoke coming from the carb or if the barrel walls are wet. If either is observed the carb is running over and flooding the engine. If you haven't rebuilt it in awhile you may find the float(s) are partially submerged or are set too high.
After you let the car sit for a period of time the fuel evaporates and things are back to normal.- Top

Re: Hot Start Problem
Terry.
If it's a 300 HP motor, take the carburetor off and check the gasket configuration to be sure that gasket, heat spacer and steel shim are all in good condition and installed properly. On my car, I took the time to plug the small heat slot holes in the intake manifold with cup shaped freeze plugs and this really keeps the heat off the carburetor, check the archives for more info on this.
Other thing to check is the choke hot air tube in exhaust manifold for rust because if this tube rusts through, hot exhaust gas gets sucked into carburetor from vacuum thru this tube. Also, if engine water temp is showing hot check archives for discussion about vacuum advance and inital timing.- Top
