I was wondering if anyone had done this recently where they recall the steps to goof proof this operation. On removing the seat and lowering the column I will be basicially working upside and backward as I peer over the column cluster. I see 2 screws at the top. There is also a silver triangular plate at the bottom, 6 o'clock position that has a 3rd screw that also anchor's the speedo. This is the bear. Are there any special tools or tricks for this one? Should I go at it from the top or bottom? When I remove it and send it for rebuild should I leave the trip odo cable in place? Should I leave the black surround which appears blue from behind in place? Was there a restorer article on this? Also anyone have any recommendations for a good rebuilder? Thanks.

Guys...
this is one (R&R of instrument cluster) you don't want to tackle blindly! The chassis service manual (CSM) gives you step-by-step instructions on how to do the job.
For example, it'll tell you the instrument cluster wiring harness goes through a folding clip at the top center of the cluster and you must reach your hand between the speedo and tach to release the harness, otherwise you'll be pulling and SAWING on the wiring harness while trying to pull the cluster out fo the dash! Take my word, sawing through the wiring harness is NOT a good idea...- Top

Re: Speedometer removal 1972/rebuild
Gordon-If you mean by "in the middle" being toward the center cluster of gauges and toward the right knee I believe there is a spring steel clip on the 71 also that makes you have to pull it up then out on the entire assembly containing both the speedo and tach. This spring steel clip anchors this speedo/tach cluster closely to the center cluster of gauges. And they built how many of these a day?- Top

Re: Speedometer removal 1972/rebuild
It has been awhile since I have done the removal on my 70, once in 1975 then again several years ago just to install the original facing with green numbers on the complete unit I bought from GM and installed in 1975 which came with white numbers on the facing. Did not know how easy it was to remove the needle and two screws to change out the faces the first time. It is not written in the service manual. The speedometer is not that hard to remove, I did not even remove my seat to lower the steering column. Anyway if you purchase the new gears you can easily install them in your old face plate. Just gently lift and turn the speedometer counter clock wise to remove and then just line it up and gently push it on. Then remove the two screws to remove the facing and install the new gears to your old face. Watch out for the long round rubber cushions when removing. These go between the lens and the unit to prevent vibration. I think there are three or four each for the tack and speedometer. I lost one and used an very, very small piece of vacuum tubing for replacement.- Top

Re: Speedometer removal 1972/rebuild
Thanks for all the help.
It made me think the people that put these things together aren't going to jump through hoops to assemble these things.
Remove pillar covers, remove right side IP panel, remove screw that holds IP top cover, remove IP top , loosen wiper door vacuum mechanism , unfasten speedometer and tach cables take out all screws that hold left side.Unplug headlight switch wires. Now you should be able to get at all the rest that restricts removal.Once I got this far it was a matter of common mechanical sense .If you want to contact me for more info write .- Top
