My repro teak steering wheel cane in today for my '67 (I know it's not original equipment, but I don't like plastic). The service manual describes steering wheel removal for a wood wheel and a telescoping wheel--neither applicable here. Anyway, for one it says to remove the horn cap by simply pulling up, for the other it says to pry off the cap. Well, it doesn't simply pull off, so how do you pry it off without damaging something? Also, must I disconnect the harness at the bottom of the steering column, as the manual says? Can't I just disconnect the battery? Thanks.

Re: C2 steering wheel removal
Larry,
Looks like you have standard column.......the horn button is held on by spring-steel prongs, and should pull off by hand. No persuasion should be necessary. Remove retaining nut, then use a steering wheel puller, or homemade device, to pull wheel. No need to disconnect harness. No need to disconnect battery, either, unless your neighbors get pi**ed-off when you blow the horn while trying to remove the horn button.

Re: C2 steering wheel removal
Pull harder!! Unless someone has bolted it in place the spring steel clips hold it.
Once you get past that, there are some phillips screws to remove and the wheel is free. No need to remove the center bolt unless you want to also replace the hub.- Top

Re: C2 steering wheel removal
Thanks, Steve--it worked! Hard to believe those little spring steel clips are that strong. The horn contact 'thingie' jumped out, but I finally figured out how it goes back in. The steering wheel looks 100% better! Thanks again for the advice.- Top
