    C2 Convt. Door Window Clunk

The driver's side window cranks up and down very well on my 66 convt. I had to relace the roller track because the original was bent. Following replacement everything worked well and I re-installed the door panel. Now I get a "clunk" sound just as I start to raise the window -- sounds like the roller is too loose in the track. Any ideas before I remove the door panel.

    Thanks,

    Dave K.

Sometimes the spring in the window regulator gets a little rusty and binds as it uncoils. If you take the window apart work some grease into the coils of the spring.

      Steve,

I do not have the door panel off yet but -- can you access the spring without taking the window out of the channel?

      Regards,

Dave, this is a sound I have heard before on older cars, but I really don't know what causes it. Perhaps wear in the parts allow the mechanism to deflect and preload as it pulls the glass up into the fully raised position; when you reverse the mechanism, the preload comes off suddenly allowing the mechanism to suddenly snap back to it's relaxed state making the clunk.

I would remove the door panel, and analyze what is happening as the window mechanism is operated up/down. I believe you should be able to reach the regulator spring once the window is in the raised position. Pay attention to where your fingers are located while operating the regulator...I suspect that regulator mechanism will cut a finger off as cleanly as a anvil pruner.

Mine were making a similiar clunking noise and I was able to minimize it by greasing.
I believe you need to remove the regulator... Look at it with the panel off.
I had mine off and was able to work grease in with the regulator horizontal in a vise while I "rolled" the unit up/down.
One side noise was completely eliminated and the other still has a faint sound from time to time. It just depends on how rusty the spring is between the coils. The absolute best way of fixing it is replace the spring.

Another thing to look at is how the window fits into the up and down tracks. I had a funny noise and I found that the window had slid to the back and was rubbing on the rear track. It was in a bind and the noise was from when this.
I used a hard rubber block and tapped the window forward and it has been fine. I had all kinds of visions of a shattered glass but just be careful.
