Blue and Green Coatings on Whitewalls

    Hi all,

I have a mint non-DOT spare that still has the white writing on the tread, etc. When I got it, it was pretty dirty and, although it cleaned up like new, I removed the green coating on the whitewall in the process. Now I would like to put it back on. Does anyone know where to get the stuff they put on new tires?

    Thanks,

    Bob

I'm pretty sure you have managed to come up with an original question no one here has ever heard before...but, then, I've been wrong before.

Unfortunately, I think you have "pulled the string", and that tire can only be enjoyed as a tire, er, exhibit now...it's investment value is now lost without its original preservative coating.

The only thing that comes to mind (seriously) is to experiment with some Easter egg dye...the pastel blue and green should be just about right. If you have kids or grandkids, your wife may even have some stashed in the cupboard.

Warning: This advice is free, and worth every penny. User is responsible for all results, including aforesaid tire whitewall becoming PERMANENTLY dyed pastel blue or green.

Chuck that was a good one. I really like the warranty, I will have to remember that one!Who am I kidding I can't remeber anything. I have a really bad case of CRS, it staretd to spread when I hit 50 and now it has matastizied.
Oh well what can I say, but that I am on the down hill slide now!

I just bought a set of radials from Diamondback Tires and there was a blue coating on the whitewall that they added when they built the tire. I'm sure they have some product they use. Bill from DBTires is active on the Corvette Forum so you might be able to post your question there or give him a call. Tim

Bob, I was told by a tire distributor that that was like a liquid soap that was used to coat whitewalls for shipping. It washes off easily.

The coating used by almost all tire manufacturers is a simple mixture of polyvinyl alcohol PVA (partially hydrolyzed not fully hydrolyzed) / water / and a dye of what ever color you want. The PVA will wash off with water and give the car owner a bright shiney whitewall. Google search for pva and it wil give all the information you need.

              Jimmy,

Lots of information available via Google, except how to mix it or where to buy it.

              Any suggestions?

              Thanks.

Call Bill Chapman or Tab Chapman at Diamond Back and they can tell you what they use; I was there two weeks ago and each sidewall finishing station had a spray bottle of it on a shelf.

                  John,

I've got Diamondbacks on the deer 71.
I'll give them a call when I return from my business trip.
