I have a matching number 1968 Corvette 427/390 HP, 4-Speed and I would like to confirm that I have the correct starter in it. The starter number on my Corvette is 1108400 8 F 1 (1968 June, 1). According to the NCRS guide, 1108400 is for L88 (possible late; usage unverified) Also, the book says that the correct number should be 1107365. For 1969 I see that 1108400 were used on all 427 engines. According to the VIN number and the plate on the driver's side door jam, my 1968 Corvette was put together in August, 1968 car so is this the correct starter for this car?

Re: 1968 427/390 Correct Starter Number??
Joe-----
The information regarding the use of the 1108400 starter for some 1968 L-88 applications which is found in some older NCRS publications is incorrect. The 1108400 starter was not used for L-88 applications. For one thing, the 1108400 starter is designed for use with a 14", 168 tooth flywheel. All L-88 used a 12-3/4", 153 tooth flywheel. In any event, I believe that the L-88 application for the 1108400 starter has been deleted from the most current issue of the 68-69 JG.
For the most part, the 1108365 was used on 1968 big blocks (except L-88). However, yours is a very late 1968 and the date code on your starter fits right in with the car's build date. I have virtually no doubt that it's original to the car. Furthermore, there's absolutely no functional reason that an 1108400 could not have been used on a 1968 Corvette----the 1108365 and 1108400 are functionally 100% interchangeable. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Richard------
Yes, I got it wrong. I was going completely from memory on the numbers and that doesn't always work so good. It is 1107365 for 1968 big block. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
