New problem, Upon finding and fixing the gas smell and the headlight/wiper door problem we now have another isssue. The fellow working on the car called to tell me the hood release cable became white-hot and burned through. He had replaced the starter solenoid and been working on the power window switches at the center console. The service manager from the local Chevy dealer stopped in to check the car. They found .8 millivolt passing through the birdcage?? This seems to be a new phenomenom. The voltage seems to only be apparent when the alarm is hot (door swith open). Any suggestion on what could be the cause/fault? Martin

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
At a National Convention we had a hood cable get hot and begin smoking. Raising the hood cured the issue. Investigation revealed the passenger side hood latch had 12 volts going to it. During the restoration a 12 volt wire was pinched under the attaching hardware under the dash board -- inside the car.
This incident lead to the encouragement of the use of the battery cut-off switch.Terry- Top

Larry, No the original problem was headlight/wiper door vacuum problems then discovering the car needed a new starter solenoid. The mechanic maintains he checked the starter solenoid and it was wired correctly. Martin- Top

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
Terry, The car did not have this problem before in the two years I have owned it. The mechanic had added that there was .8 milliamps passing through the birdcage to the frame when the door switch is open (circuit for buzzer closed). The Chevy dealer says that is nothing to be concerned about. The console was removed during this same service and found that there were 4 mounting screws (they screw up into the console for the power window to console attachment). The ground from the fuse box to the frame is/was in place. The fellow also tightened the rear bowl of the carb. Perplexing. Some condition had to have changed that preciptated burning the hood release cable. Martin- Top

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
Where is your ground wire from the wiring harness attached? Do you know what to look for? If it is correctly attached, you can see it correctly installed by just laying in the ground and use a good flashlight. What about the big cable from the frame to the engine, is it installed correctly?- Top

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
Again, go to the last thing that was done. You said the guy replaced the solinoid. That means he had the starter off. The wire from the wipers and the fan motor should go to ground at the starter. Lots of times unknowing mechanics put this wire on the hot terminal of the solinoid. Most likely you are going to find it attached there.- Top

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
Checked the starter wires. The big wires are going to the right spot. The purple wire is going to the inboard terminal. The yellow wire from the coil is going to the outboard terminal on the solenoid. The VOM now shows almost no amps through the cage to the frame. Strange. Martin- Top

Re: 72 burned up hood release cable
The last things worked on the car was the answer. As it turned out the windshield wipers were not retracting completely. According to the mechanic there was a wire that feeds the wiper motor that was affected by the wipers that were obstructing the wiper door. That wire found its ground through the birdcage; through the hood cable; into the frame. Talk about bizzare. Well, all has been corrected and fortunately the only thing burned was alot of patience, time and a cable. Thanks again for all the help everyone. Martin- Top
