    1953 C1 CORVETTE TOP

Hi, my first of many questions. I was going to replace the rear vinyl window on the soft top which I believed was original. The vinyl has writing on the lower right hand side,( where it was made, the type of material, how to clean and some numbers, ect.). Al Knoch company was going to sell me the vinyl window, however, there is a question as to the window I currently have. The window has an zipper on two sides and the top to allow it to be opened. The soft top is in good condition and looks original. How can I tell if the soft top is original, because if it is I would prefer to keep it as it is in good condition. Thanks in advance.

    Regards Bridget.

If it has zippers, I'd think it not original... *NM*

        Re: 1953 C1 CORVETTE TOP

Tonneau covers were very popular with 1st generation Corvettes..and many were retro fitted with a zippered tonneau....so one side of the cockpit could remain open if the driver wished.

Maybe the back window of your 54 convertible top was replaced by an upholstery shop that also did tonneau covers..and used the zipper method.

Probably not original..but check the history on that car to be sure.

There are a few styling cars out there with unusual treatments.

Thanks Joe, I am very new to the corvette world! How do I check the history of the car. The prior owner (1955-2007)of the car is older and unsure about any details. Does the soft top have any markings such as numbers ect that could help me determine if it is original. Thanks in advance, Bridget

Suggest you take a digital picture of the convertible top and post the picture on this tech board.. that way you will get help from those who are familiar with C1 convertible tops.

I removed an original top from a 54 and installed a new replacement years ago..but I can't tell you all the specific differences between the original and the replacement.

I also currently have a 15,000 mile 54..but I think the top was replaced years ago.

Check to see if there are any embossed letters, numbers or logo's on the rear window.
