1970 Donnybrooke Green Paint

Any suggestions on what is the best way to match the original paint on my 1970 donnybrooke green. I know if I had original dupont paint this would be the best way. I tried to use PPG lacquer but the color way way off. A large paint chip that could be shot with camera would help. Any help?

Most of the paint distributor houses have a colorimeter to achieve custom blend matching accuracy. You use the service by taking in a component that's painted and easy to remove (like the gas door) for them to scan and the colorimeter to spit out its findings regarding custom blending components for the paint to be mixed...

What is customary when you get a paint mixed, do you just take it home, shoot it and eat it if it doesn't meet your expectations?

I had to do just that when searching for a saddle tan mix, got expensive. How do you approach this problem?

I use autocolorlibrary.com and have been happy with them. They are very knowledgeable on paint applications for vintage cars, and they have all of the paint formulas. They should be able provide the correct color without having to give them a sample. They carry PPG acrylic lacquer.

Avoid the problem in the first place!

Know what you're doing when you buy the paint and understand the distributor's stance on guaranteeing it's match characteristics. Then, trust but verify and shoot a test section before going 'live' with the paint. Last, experience with cutting the paint with thinner + using a compatible thinner has a LOT to do with the final result.

Posted about thia awhile back Going through this still. I have an original dupont sample that was used on the paint line to verify color. (check archives about it)

I also went the PPG path. Ordered a spray can. Way to forest-like green. Went to another distributor with my smple. Tried to explain. He mixed the formula, as is, in a pint. NG same forest green. He then doctored that a bit and it was a little closer. Took it home and sprayed a bit. Still to forest green.

The guy at least will keep adjusting, and I hope the color gets there. Lot of trail and error. Could be awhile, but he keeps a formula for each change. If I get the right color I can send you the formula.

I have a 70 Donnybrooke Green coupe that I painted in 1991 with Dupont lacquer, what part of the country are you in?

Thanks. I have been working with my PPG distributor to try to get the color right. But I am still not there and the distributor has said that all they can do. If you come up with a match let me know.

I am in Tennessee. I think I find the Dupont paint but not the right tints.
