    57 Carpeting

I just purchased carpeting for my 57 from Al Knoch. I ordered online and received it within a week, but I forgot to order the glue. Can I use a general purpose spray adhesive, or would it be less of a mess to brush it on? What would be an equivalent product that I could purchase locally? Where are the 'carpet trim screws' located, and is it recommended to replace them?
    Thanks in advance.

On the passenger side..you should be able to locate the upper left and upper right screw holes in the foot board area from the original carpet.

Probably the same for the drivers side..but my memory fails me.

I have used 3M's spray adhesive and have had good success, but be carefull. Once the carpet backing has made contact with the adhesive, it will be extremely difficult to get it off in one peice.

with old carpet removed, have a buddy shine flashlite on the pass and drivers toeboards, you get underneath with a 3 penny nail and the light shinning thru the fiberglass will point out the location of the original trim screws. push nail thru and have buddy circle with a felt tipped pen. then you'll know the wherabouts of the holes. next lay in new carpet and with a sewing pin, penetrate the carpet from below. have yer buddy take a small leather punch and create a small hole in the carpet. don't advance the trim screw without a small leather punch hole, otherwise you may well scar the carpet. mike

Mike I do something similar, but instead of a leather punch, I use an ice pick. I heat the ice pick with a torch so that it cauterizes the carpet so the screw will not catch a thread and make a run.

          Works for me.

            Re: '57 Carpet

I got the Daytona weave rubber back carpet from Al Knoch for my '57 and placed the pieces correctly in the foot wells. Then I placed a couple 25 lb. barbell plates and placed them in the middle where the seat would go, to keep the carpet from shifting. Then I folded back the front half of the carpet slowly and sprayed a single coat of 3M Superglue on the fiberglass only. The one coat keeps the carpet from moving horizontally but not vertically. If your careful, you can pull it back up in one piece, but you don't want to end up doing that if possible. PT

heated ice pick cautery a great idea. don't have to put a piece of hardwood under the carpet as backup with the leather punch. mike
