    Inside Rear View Mirror Rebuilding

    Hello:

    Does anybody know of a service that rebuilds inside rear view mirrors? Looked
    in the present "Driveline" and could not find one. I have one that needs the
    stainless steel backing to be straighten and a new glass to be put in or old
    glass cleaned up. Please advise if you know of one.

    Thanks; Larry Evoskis

    Larry:

    Contact Paragon Reproductions at (800) 882-4688 or www.corvette-paragon.com.

    They recently rebuilt my 1967 inside mirror and did an excellent job.

    Regards, Larry Mulder

          Re: Mirror Rbldg.Gray/Black Knob? Carol Fish.

          Hello;
          What about Paragon's claim that the JM is wrong in saying the knob on the inside rear view mirror should be gray. They claim black is correct.
          JM manual is the final say, but.
          Carol is not available at that number, Haven't seen him in years. Used to see him at all the major swaps w/ his wife Mona.
          Thanks, Ray

            Re: Carol Fish

            I was told that Carol Fish is essentially out of the mirro restoration business since her husband passed away last year.

                Hello;
                Sorry Larry. I got Carol Fish & Carol hook confused. Hope it's not oldtimers setting into the brain.

                  Color...

                  Sometimes the JG books leave something to be desired in their description. It's TRUE the day/nite mirrors use a grey plastic knob to actuate reflection position. BUT, the early versions (up through early '67) were a tear drop shape and the underlying grey plastic was painted black for cosmetic considerations.

                  You can verify this by looking up inside the actuator knob's access hole and seeing the factory original color on the upper shaft of the knob that wasn't subject to human handling and/or sunlight bake.

                  When the mirror was redesigned to comply with 'Ralph Nader' safety concerns (facial injuries in a frontal collision), the knob changed to a low profile, L-shaped lever facing rearward and the glass was mounted in a rubber surround. Then, the native grey plastic of the actuator knob was left natural to cosmetically match the grey rubber glass surround.

                    Gary, et al - While not in the mirror restoration business any more, Carol is selling what inventory she has on hand. Her correct phone is 502 933 3734. She is selling outright, i.e. no trades. Try that number and see if she has what you need. Regards, Dick

                      Re: Color...

                      Jack, are you saying the the early 67 mirrors didn't have the rubber surround on them? I assumed that the Ralph Nader changes started with the early 67 mirror since that is when the rubber surround was added. It is my understanding that the only difference in the mirror between early 67 and later 67 was the square versus elongated knob. Paragon makes a repro of the early 67 mirror and it appears on it that only the knob is different.

                        Re: 67 Inside RVM Surround ?

                        Tim - I don't know who is saying what, so to confirm, the early 67 Corvette inside rear view mirror has the rubber surround and it is gray in color. Pete

                          No!

                          I'm saying two things changed in '67 (please re-read) and they were:

                          (1) A grey rubber surround for the mirror glass to reduce facial injury potential.

                          and

                          (2) The actuator knob making the transition from a trapeziodal or 'tear drop' shape to a rearward pointing L-shape.

                          There should be no confusion here... From the '67 Judging Guide text:

                          "....Two different mechanisms are used to adjust the day/night position of the mirror. Through VIN #2500 +/-, a straight knob roughly one-half inch long performs the function. Later production uses a grey plastic lever, roughly one inch log, for adjusting the mirror position."

                          I'll admit, the JG text could have been written better (call out the geometry of the two knobs), but it's saying the early '67 mirrors used the same knobs that were carried over from '64-66 production (teardrop shaped) while later cars used the rear facing, L-shaped, knobs. BOTH versions of the '67 mirror had the reflective glass mounted on grey rubber vs. being crimped into the housing as was common to '64-66 mirrors.
