Details, details.... Regarding my 68 alternator. There are two terminal posts on the back side with nuts on them. Originally, were these nuts just plain steel nuts or were they those self locking nuts with the plastic inserts in them to prevent them from coming loose?? Thanks, Terry

Re: Question regarding alternator nuts and bolts..
Is it an original unchanged alternator? The reason I ask this is because I was going through my junk and I found an old alternator. The nuts were both polly lock style and they looked original. I can't tell though if it went through a rebuild though. Thanks, Terry- Top

Terry-----
They were not original. One of the original nuts was a standard hex nut of 10-32 thread size, GM-284M material (SAE grade 5), 1/8" thickness, and cadmium or zinc finish.
The other nut was of 12-24 thread size, GM-286M material (SAE grade 5), 7/32" thickness and zinc finish.
Notwithstanding the above, the lock nuts are not a bad idea. In fact, I'd say that they're a very good idea to help prevent troubling "loose connections".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
