      Patrick; a follow-up question

      Patrick,

Did you use a straight edged mask to keep the silver paint from hitting too high in the carb direction?

Re: Sliver/Orange split at bypass hose

My understanding is that the bypass hose from water pump shows all orange until half way up on the hose clamp at the manifold wher silver starts. I've seen some original 64 pictures of a FI car (from the Michael guy). Also if you search past posting in this year of distributor overspray you will see some examples to silver on some distributors, however the early TI units probably did not get installed until after paint so.

A close inspection of my 64 FI unit shows some silver overspray on the front of the nozzle blocks. (Car has been verified to spring of 66)

Would also expect that the thermostat housing was painted on the manifold (do not know that for sure - just suspect it)

In light of the above I would expect that the factory used some form of a shield placed behind the water pump, along the valve cover, and in front of distributor. Then sprayed the bare block area and thermostat housing.

        Only a theory

          Re: Patrick; a follow-up question

          Gary,

I made a mask similar to what I suspected Flint used. I'll admit it - my model was a 70 LT-1 I judged a couple of years previous with 17,000 miles. Anyway, the mask was made from thin non-corrugated cardboard, and covered the things I suspected should get covered. I thought I'd read that in 66 the water pump fitting and hose were added later, so we did not paint them.

I used Krylon dull aluminum. It worked well.

              Re: Patrick; a follow-up question

An anonymous source sent me some pictures of low mileage or original motors.

Note here the silver towards the front of the heads along the intake valley:

Note the paint on this 64. It's a 64 so extrapolations might not work for other years:

This is a plug used in the oil fill of an intake at the time of painting. It was then removed when the chrome oil fill was to be inserted:

The anonymous source notes that he can recall silver flakes washing off original valve covers when these cars were relatively young. Commonly used chemicals would cause this to happen so it's no surprise that many cars no longer show this paint.
