Hi guys I need one of the wizzards to help me ident an engine fan. It is a 7 blade with a 2 and an H and the word FRONT on the front side and the letters ERX on a blade on the back side. It is just under 18" and has the 4 rivets per blade with the circular pattern on the front sinde. If I remember right it came off either my 69 Corvette or my 1969 Camaro but after a million years of storage I can't remember. Since there are no part number stamped anywhere can somebody identify this fan. Thanks in advance for the help. GL

There is only one Corvette fan used for 1969 that it could be. That would be fan GM #3955182. However, since it doesn't have that part number on one of the blades, it's not that fan. I have never seen an example of the 3955182 that didn't have the part number on one of the blades
What is the bolt circle of the fan clutch mounting holes (i.e. the center-to-center dimension measured DIAGONALLY)?In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

Hi Joe it appears the bolt holes are about 3 1/4" measured to the hole across. If that is not what you meant on measurement let me know. Thanks GLComment

I have the original and a NOS 3955182 on my 69, both have the part numbers on one or more blades, but do not look like the above fan. They have smooth blades and do not have the concaved areas around the rivets.

In that case, the fan is DEFINITELY NOT a 1969 Corvette fan or, for that matter, ANY pre-1971 Corvette fan. It could be a 1969 Camaro fan, though. Or, it could be other Chevrolet car fans of the 67+ period.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

Quite frankly I happen to have a 3955182 fan & didn't know it's true application. (1969 350 & 427 a/c Corvettes, & 1970 350 only a/c). I was using it temporarily on my '66 BB a/c until I found a 7-blade fan with the curved blade ends which now I believe is the correct fan with part # 3853943. If anybody is interested in that 3955182 fan I'd like to part with it.

Raymond - I don't know where everyone is at on this fan but I would not expect the 3853943 7 blade fan to have a 66 BIG BLOCK application as it's the 7 blade fan specified for the 65-66 small block with C60 air conditioning. As far as I know, there was only one fan blade assembly used on 66 BIG BLOCK with C60 and it was the same one as used on the 66 non-air conditioned BIG BLOCK Corvettes and it had 5 blades. I'm pretty sure you are right because the 5-blade fan is according to the assembly manual. However, I noticed that the 3853943 7-blade fan was listed as "1st design" and applicable for ALL 64-66 a/c Corvettes. I have also seen undocumented '66 cars with the 7-blade fan. So where did this fan come from?

Raymond - Based on the AIM and looking at C60 equipped Corvettes my read is that the listing of the 3853943 for 66 Corvettes is a proofing err and once in the system never was corrected and lets face it the fan blade assembly will function for that application.
As far as 66 Corvettes BIG BLOCK and small block and w/ and w/o C60 having the 3853943 7 blade fan blade assembly, you just know folks and the Dealers were looking for the "magic mushroom" to resolve overheating problems, real or unreal, and if it worked great. I don't know if it always cured the problem but at least the Dealer could say they did something.
My comments are from the "originality" perspective and if installation of the 3853943 fan helps keep the engine from overheating as I said before great because the cars are too much fun to drive and us "older" folks need AC.

Thanx for the update. It makes sense because typos can always be found in the nanuals. The 7-blade fan is bound to help in cooling the 427 but I've personally found it to be negligible. If I refrain from turning on the a/c the motor obviously runs cooler but then I'm the one who suffers! What I have noticed is that adding leaded gas made my 427 run significantly cooler. (I get leaded gas at my local speed shop) RaymondComment
