Re: Cap should be air tight...

Thanks for all your help! I've got a new cork gasket on order AND a new filler tube. From your post, I'm thinking I don't have the correct filler tube! There's nothing for the cap to screw and tighten down on - there's just an expansion around the neck of the tube for a "pop-on" type cap. It looks correct from comparisons to picts & catalogues, and has age - that's what buffaloed me. I'm new to this and still don't know my filler tube from a hole in the ground! Thanks!

      Hi David,
Is the original gasket in your cap a solid round type or does it have the middle cut out like a doughnut?

Re: Cap should be air tight...

It is a donut. I did get a new gasket (a solid one), installed it, and the cap was still loose. I then doubled it with the old donut (as was suggested) and viola! I turned the cap 1/4 turn, it snugged right down, air-tight. Apparently my fill tube is correct. On closer inspection, it has two expanded ridges just below the tube neck for the cap to snug down on. It seems my cap "lips" have expanded, or need adjusting so the one gasket didn't do the trick. When I bought the car, a rubber, pop-on cap was installed. I initially thought the tube was a replacement - it was black. It turned out it was black from grime and, cleaned, was chrome plated - although rusted in spots with chrome missing. I had the one old chrome cap that fit loose and ordered a new one that fit the same way - so I began to scratch my head and wonder if I was missing something here. Doubleing the gaskets did it and I should have thought to try it, but once that element of doubt crept in . . .!
I assume the donut gasket is the correct one?
        Thanks, David
