    Correct Oil pan for 67 - 427?

    My current pan has some rather nasty road rash and I am planning to replace.

    I had believed that the correct part to use is a 5 quart pan - part number 3974328 / 14091356. However, I have also see references to a 6 quart pan being correct. Could anyone clarify for me what I want to use for a car being judged?

    Glenn-----

    The original pan was GM #3872429.

    GM #3974328 is a SERVICE-only replacement oil pan for 1965-66 passenger cars with 396/427. This pan holds 4 quarts + 1 with filter.

    GM #14091356 is the current SERVICE-replacement oil pan for all 1965-74 Corvettes with big block engines. It is VERY similar to the original GM #3872429 used for your application. It differs in the following ways:

    1) it has no hole in the center of the front oil pan seal radius;

    2) it has no corner reinforcements (these are available in reproduction and can be easily added; no need to spot weld to the pan);

    3) the internal baffling is slightly reconfigured and installed a bit lower than that in the original pan. This requires the use of the later oil baffle (supplied with the pan) in order to achieve best "slosh" control.

    ALL Corvette big block oil systems hold 5 quarts + 1 with filter change. No exceptions. It was this way for 1965, the first year; it was this way for 1974, the last year.

    Virtually all, if not all, big block oil systems for other Chevrolet CARS have a capacity of 4 quarts + 1 quart with filter.

      Joe - you are a veritable fountain of knowledge, thanks for the detailed clarificaion. I think I can live with this subtle degree of lost originality

      My original confusion resulted from the fact that some folks refer to system capacity (including filter) while others refer to strictly pan capacity.

      Thanks again.
