    1964 Gas Line Replacement

    Hi all,

I am having during the initial starting sequence of my 64 327 300hp car. Once started and fuel is present no problems. Yesterday my mechanic buddy and rebuilt and replaced the original fuel pump with no sucess. Planning on having the carb looked at and if that's not the problem then we think it's the fuel line coming from the tank. My question is how difficult is this to get to and replace? Looks as if the body will need to be lifted to get to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Craig

Is your 64 having its starting problem after sitting for days or during constant use? What carb is on your 64?

I replaced the gas line on my '66 without removing the body. The line must be cut about 4 inches below where it exits the frame (coming from the gas tank) in the rear wheel opening. It is not difficult, but with patience, the rear portion of the gas line can be routed thru the rear tail light hole and thru the frame. The front portion of the gas line can be replaced without much effort, unless the body has settled against the frame along the right side. And even then, the gas line can be routed very near the original location. Be sure to use a high quality rubber hose where the gas line reconnections are made. GOod Luck.

It's the original carb and it only is difficult to start overnight or sitting longer. Once it is started it's no problem. Thanks.

          Craig,
After it sits overnight or for a day or so, before you try to start the car, remove the air cleaner. Without trying to start the car, pump the accelerator a few times and see if fuel is squirting from the squirters at the top of the front two barrels. If no fuel is present, this will be an indication the fuel bowls are leaking after the engine is stopped. If this is the case, a rebuild will be necessary.
If there is fuel being delivered at the squirters on the first pump of the accelerator, the fuel bowls are full and little leaking is indicated. That does not mean the carb is perfect, but it is probably is in working order (enough to start the car).
After driving cars with Electronic Fuel Control, it took me a while to "get the hang" of starting my '66 COrvette. After extended periods of sitting, a couple of pumps to shoot a little fuel into the engine and to set the choke is all that is necessary for a cold engine.
When it is hot, just hit the key!

Why not remove the line exiting the fuel pump and crank the engine a couple of times to see what happens with the fuel delivery line? Replacing the fuel line is not easy and I would certainly want to troubleshoot and isolate the problem before I started replacing things.

FWIW, when my cars sits for a couple of days, I need to crank a couple of times, as has already been suggested. If the car sits for two to three weeks, several seconds of cranking are required. Btw, my carb was restored by a well respected individual and it runs well. It just doesn't like to sit for extended periods of time.
