1967 FUEL PUMP LEAK - REPLACEMENT

Hello; I have a 67 350HP, which was restored 10 years ago (Triple Crown car), and has only been driven 300 miles since. I took the car out this past fall, and noticed that the fuel pump leaks a from the bottom. There is a little oil mixed in the leak. My question is as follows: The access looks tight to remove the two bolts if I want to change the fuel pump (is this a difficult job?) Where should I buy the proper replacement with the AC logo, part number etc.. in order to get top points at judging? I have seen it at Paragon for over $100.00! My second question is with regards to the positraction unit. I have to replace the differential fluid (presently synthetic) with the proper GM fluid and the additive. What is the required 'tool size' to remove the four sided bolt on the side of the unit? I want to pull out the fluid with a pump. Thanks guys!

Re: 1967 FUEL PUMP LEAK - REPLACEMENT

I have a 68 327/350 original owner and have only had to change the fuel pump once so far, now that I have stated that it will probably go out soon. Changed out in 1975 in the parking lot of a motel so it is not to difficult. Using proper tools not to round the gas line fittings is important. Remove the two bolts retaining the pump and before installing the new pump as mentioned in previous archives remove a bolt at the front of the engine just around the corner of the block from the fuel pump. This will be a short bolt that you will have to reuse. Using a longer bolt install it a few turns initially. Push the fuel pump rod up, and lightly turn the installed bolt only enough to retain the fuel pump rod to permit easier installation of the new fuel pump. The fuel pump rod is extended by the force of the camshaft turning. The fuel pump rod will be retracted into the block the most when the camshafts lowest lobe is lined up with the fuel pump rod. You will have to either turn the engine manually or with bumping the starter. It does not take but just a bump to move the camshaft. Retacting the fuel pump rod takes the pressure off of the fuel pump arm and really makes the installation so much easier. Remember to install the original short bolt in the front of the block.

      David -

      You'll want a 5/8" 8-point socket to remove/install the fill plug.

Not sure if it is the same on a 67 as on my 68 but I have had the fuel pump off the car more thna few times. The best method for me to remove the two fuel pump retaining bolts is to go through the passenger side wheel well with a very long extension. This should give you a straight on shot at those bolts.

As far as the fuel pump push rod, as stated above there is a small bolt that is removed and the fuel pump push rod slides out. To replace it, I have had the best luck with using a heavy wheel bearing grease on the push rod. Slather the push rod with the grease and push it up into place. The grease will hold it in position while you install the new pump.
