    67 Door Hinge Rivets

I replaced the hinge pins on my 67 coupe and now I have found out that the rivits that hold the inner steel plate (inside the door) are loose any ideas, on how to tighten??

    Hi Bill:

What needs to be done is to replace the rivets with bolts that have nuts installed on the inside of the door. To keep things looking original, you will need special bolts with heads that have been machined to look like the original rivets.

I think John Hinckley may have posted a photo of the required hardware in a previous discussion. If you can't find or make what you need, I think I know of someone who makes these and I can try to track him down for you.

      Hi Bill,
I believe they are called "elevator bolts". They have a big flat head and can be turned down to rivet size. Look in the hardware section at Lowes.

        Bill,

The easiest method is to replace the rivets with machined weld studs. I have used these on several doors.

Bill, You said that you replaced the hinge pins, but did you also replace the hinge pin bushings that are in the door hinge side of the hinges?

I reset the original rivets while the door was off using a good piece of metal for a bucking bar and they tightened right up. Made the door fit perfectly. This might be worth a try because you can always replace them.
