Do I understand the JG correct is saying the backing plate for the fuel pump on a 1959 should not be painted. Thanks Jimmy

Bare, unpainted steel is how it was. It was not painted or, even, electroplated. This part was installed at St. Louis; that's why it was not painted with the engine assembly.
I've always wondered why GM didn't, at least, specify that the plate be zinc-plated. But, they didn't. The same plate was used for all small blocks until the time that electric fuel pumps were brought into use and the plate changed to a block-off plate which was installed at the engine plants. The fuel pump plate is still available to this day in SERVICE and it's still bare steel, just like it was in 1955.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
