I currently have a new water pump on my car ('61, 230hp) I am looking to replace it with an original/rebuilt unit. Any recommendations for someone to contact?

Re: C1 Water Pump Recommendations

Bill Mock is "waterpump extraordinaire" and should be able to supply you with just about any waterpump you require, fully rebuilt and "ready-to-go". Bill advertises in the Driveline.
By the way, your application requires a GM CASTING #3782608. This is a VERY common casting; probably the most common of all pre-1969 Chevrolet small block waterpump castings. Millions were manufactured. Plus, the early ones, like the one you need, have no dates on them, so you need not be concerned about that aspect. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Correction
Jeff-----
It's possible that I'm incorrect about the waterpump used for your application. 1961 Corvette with 283 used the same cast iron intake manifold as 1961 passenger car with 283. This manifold did not have provisions for external bypass, so it would seem that a non-external bypass type pump would have been used (i.e. the GM #3782608). However, it's possible that the external-bypass-type pump, GM #3782609, was used. I don't know why it would have been, but C1 applications are certainly not something I'm real familiar with. I'm sure that Bill Mock will know, though.
I hope we can hear from others with more information on this issue. Let's hope that the '608' is correct for you, though. As I say, it's a VERY easy to come by casting. On the other hand, the '609' is a MUCH more difficult casting to find and WAY more expensive when you do. In fact, it's probably the most difficult of all Corvette waterpump castings to find.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Correction
Jeff and Joe The judging manual for 1961 and 1962 cars stated that the water pump casting number is indeed 3782609 and will probably be obscured by the pulley, does not have a casting date and the upper pump boss has a 5/8" hole and does not use a reducer sleeve between the hex by pass fitting and the water pump. That whats on my 61, although I don't know if its original. Many of the 61"s I ve observed have this same set-up. Good luck Leo- Top

Does your car use an external radiator supply tank and is the upper bypass fitting on the '609' waterpump connected to the external supply tank? If not, what is connected to the upper bypass fitting on the '609' pump?In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

61's use an aluminum radiator and external supply tank mounted on the driver's side of the engine, and the bypass fitting on the water pump is connected via a rubber hose to the outlet fitting on the bottom of the supply tank.- Top

Re: Correction
Joe,
My car does use a expansion tank and the fitting from the 609 water pump does go to it. The car is a mid November 60 SLAD I believe. Although not alot of original parts were on it when I purchased it the ones that are and the VIN all make me strongly believe the mid November SLAD is correct.
