    Luggage depth - various C2 to C6

I'd like to know how much room you have behind the seats in various years. I read the other day that '68s had more room than '72s, but I'm not sure that is true. I think the midyears are the longest.

Can you measure your car on the floor from the top of the metal divider (luggage stop) in front to the bulkhead in back and post that distance here along with year and model of your car.

    For example:

    30 inches 1968 conv.

I can't believe that only two people could measure their luggage area. Still, it doesn't surprise me, due to the many posts on here which never get a response at all. At least with this one, the only technical expertise anyone needs is a tape measure or yard stick and a car.

...and at least half of us still have our cars put away for the winter.

Ok, so there are what, 15,000 NCRS members? About 50 of them read this board? Half are buried in snow, so that is 25 left, and only two have responded?

Then how many non-NCRS members read this board?

Unless the car is stored away in some remote facility, how hard is it to walk out in the garage and open a car door? Or lift the car cover? I thought winter was when most were busy doing those restoration projects so that they would be ready for spring driving.

Those with heated garages may be doing restoration projects. The rest of us have to uncover the car. Since you asked your question I have been in the garage perhaps four or five times, and last night was the first I remembered to get a tape, take the car cover partly off, and measure it -- then I forgot to post it. I guess I have more on my mind than measuring the luggage space on a 37 year old Corvette.

I was hoping to gather enough information from many to compile this all in one message so that it would be easy to find in the archives. But I guess I'll have to wait until summer.

I am surpised at the differences, though. I knew there were some, but I am surprised that between 1967 and 1972 nearly 10 inches were lost.

Looking at a midyear and a early C3, I see the body mounts were moved due to the rear bulkhead moving forward, but I can't determine why since it looks like the tank is the same place on the frame. It seems like the frame is the same length.

                  Anyone have explanations?

Actually Chris the part of this that relates to C3s was covered in an article, with pictures, in The Restorer while I was Editor. I polished up some research Rolf Krueger had done on the subject, and printed it after he passed.

I believe beginning with 1972 (but it might be different for coupes and convertibles, I'm working from memory here) more body clearance was allowed in front of the gas tank at the sacrifice of interior room. Although I have never seen anything official as to the reason, logic would indicate this was for the purposes of occupant protection in the event of rear end collisions.

I think the baffling part is from '67 to '68. The tank looks to be very close to the same location and size, yet, there is roughly 7 inches difference that does not show up as a gap.

I've seen midyears with C3 tanks in them and they fit, so the difference in size of the tank can't account for 7 inches.
